Surfing

Surfing has been the number one water sport attraction for many years since the day of the hippy travelers of the sixties and seventies. Ever since those times, many people have been attracted to Bali because of the great surfing it has to offer, and it is now one of the top surf travel destinations in the world. Bali is ideal for both "hard core" surfers who are keen to ride huge waves that are equal to the best, as well as beach goers who are content just to float in the warm waters.

There are a few reasons why the surf is good on this island. Apart from anything else, striping down to your board shorts and dunking yourself in the water is really refreshing option. However Bali is most unique for surfing because of the huge swell that is built as it travels north from the southern oceans and catches the shores.
The best spots for surfing are Kuta Beach, Legian Beach, Canggu, Uluwatu, Nusa Dua. Although Bali's surf is the ideal surfer's paradise, one needs to treat the ocean with great respect and be aware of the potential dengers. The waves can have tremendously power due to the long distance travel of the huge swells. Very strong currents and rips are common, and may people find themselves caught in rips that are impossible to swim out of. Often the waves travel in sets with up to ten minutes between sets in which the ocean can appear calm, so before entering the water it is always a good idea to observe the conditions for extended period of time. Unless you are a highly experienced surfer yourself.

"Ngaben" (Cremation Ceremony)

Ngaben or the Cremation Ceremony is the ritual performed to send the dead through the transition to his next life. The village Kul Kul, hanging in the tower of the village temple, will sound a certain beat to announce the departure of the deceased. The body of the deceased will be placed at Bale Delod, as if he were sleeping, and the family will continue to treat him as if he were still alive yet sleeping. No tears are shed, for he is only gone temporarily and he will reincarnate into the family. The Priest consults the Dewasa to determine the proper day for the ceremony. On the day of the ceremony, the body of the deceased is placed inside a coffin which is then placed inside a sarcophagus in the form of a buffalo (called Lembu) or a temple structure called Wadah made of paper and light wood. The Wadah will be carried to the village cremation site in a procession. The climax of Ngaben is the burning of the Wadah, using fire originating from a holy source. The deceased is sent to his afterlife, to be reincarnated in the future.

"Subak" Irrigation Management

Balinese rice cultivation is famous all over the world for its efficient use of irrigation water. At the heart of irrigation management are the water user associations called subak. They are the backbone of Balinese rice cultivation. Subak has been described by several authors. It is commonly recognized as an autonomous socio-religious association which deals with matters related to the cultivation and irrigation of rice. They have evolved over centuries, organized by the farmers themselves without (or little) guidance from central authorities. The subak are considered to be one of the most effective irrigator organizations in the world.
The subak is a mixture of different units within a clearly defined geographical area. They are:

a. It is a technological unit including a main water inlet and a complex system of collectively owned in virilocal residence sons stay in the father’s compound uniting the men of a given patrilineal group. Irrigation canals which secure equal access to irrigation water to all the subak members. The water shares are determined by a combination of area sizes and mutual agreements, and technically implemented with fixed proportional flow division structures.

b. It is a physical unit. The boundaries of a subak are defined by all the rice fields which receive water from the subak irrigation infrastructure. The rice fields are also part of the nearest customary village. Yet, the subak does not correspond to the social unit of the village (Bray, 1994).

c. It is a social unit comprising all farmers who cultivate land within the subak boundaries and receive water from the subak irrigation infrastructure. The farmers live in the surrounding villages.

d. It is a legal unit given the status of customary law societies with clearly defined rules and regulations written down in a law book called “awig-awig”. This set of laws regulates rights and duties among the members. It includes public obligations, regulations concerning land and water use, legal transactions of land transfers, collective religious ceremonies, and sanctions when breaking the subak laws. The awig-awig of subak has been passed down orally over generations. Nowadays, however, most subak have a written version at their disposal.

e. It is a religious unit including ceremonies on the individual level, the subak level, and the inter-subak level. The ceremonies vary in scale, involvement and duration. The ceremonies ask for protection against pests and diseases, and honour god for letting human beings work the land. The most elaborated ones involve all subak who receive water from the same Crater Lake.
